Coco Gauff is the latest to suffer an upset loss in this year's final major tournament

By Isabel Gonzalez

1 min read

The 2024 US Open continues heating up in the final week. Top seeds are falling left and right, and Sunday was no different as reigning women's champion Coco Gauff was upset by fellow American Emma Navarro during the round of 16.

Navarro, the No. 13 seed, earned the 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win while Gauff struggled with her serve and forehand. Gauff, the world No. 3, registered a total of 19 double faults, along with 60 unforced errors. Navarro lost in the first round of last year's tournament, but things are going much better for her now. She is set to take on Paula Badosa in Tuesday's quarterfinal round.

The round of 16 of the men's competition is happening without two of the world's top three men's players after No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz were upset on back-to-back nights. Without them, the American men's chances at potentially snapping a 21-year major drought have dramatically increased. The last American man to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open.

No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz, No. 14 Tommy Paul and No. 20 Frances Tiafoe are still chasing that goal.

"If it's me who ends it, then that's like my life's dream basically, so it would mean everything to me," said Fritz in aninterview with CBS Sports.

Fritz reached the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 8 Casper Ruud. He has never gone deeper in any Grand Slam, but he will be looking for the semifinals ticket when he faces world No. 4 Alexander Zverev. They met earlier this year at Wimbledon round of 16. It was an intense five-set battle that Fritz won from two sets down.

Meanwhile, Tiafoe advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 win against Alexei Popyrin, who upset Djokovic in the third round. Tiafoe will now take on No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday. In order to join Fritz and Tiafoe in the quarterfinals, Paul will have to get through world No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Monday.

Keep it locked here for frequent updates during the remainder of the 2024 US Open.

Frances Tiafoe advances to quarterfinals

American star and No. 20 seed Frances Tiafoe definitely broke a sweat, but he took advantage of the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium while working his way to a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 win against Alexei Popyrin -- the man who upset world No. 2 Novak Djokovic in the third round.

Tiafoe reached the semifinals in 2022, and he is hoping to finish the job this time around to end the American men's 21-year major drought. He will take on No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday.

World No. 4 Alexander Zverev will meet No. 12 Taylor Fritz in quarterfinals

Brandon Nakashima took the first set against Alexander Zverev, but the German star bounced back to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 during Sunday's round of 16. Zverev has never won a Grand Slam, but he made the US Open final in 2020, and also made the French Open title match his year.

Zverev will take on American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday, which will be a rematch of this years's round of 16 at Wimbledon. That was quite a show, as Fritz won that one from two sets down.

Last year's runner-up Daniil Medvedev advances

Italy's Flavio Cobolli gave Daniil Medvedev some good rallies in the third set, but Medvedev broke serve four straight times to get the job done. With his 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win on Saturday, Medvedev has now reached the fourth round of the US Open in six consecutive years -- including his title in 2021.

He made it to the title match last year before losing to Novak Djokovic, but his chances at winning the trophy have increased in the past 48 hours. Djokovic, the No. 2 seed, was upset by Alexei Popyrin in the third round. The night before, No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz was stunned by Botic van de Zandschulp. Medvedev is one of the favorites to win it all, along with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

World No. 1 Iga Świątek continues taking care of business

Swiatek took a 6-4, 6-2 win against No. 25 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Saturday, improving her US Open record to 19-4. She has made it to at least the fourth round at Flushing Meadows four years in a row, including her title in 2022.

She lost to Jelena Ostapenko during last year's round of 16, but Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka are the top favorites to win it this year. The Polish star has won 11 of her last 13 matches.

No. 14 seed Tommy Paul advances to round of 16

Tommy Paul earned a ticket to the next round with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory against Canada's Gabriel Diallo on Saturday. The American came back from two breaks down in the fourth set to force a tiebreak and eventually take the win, but he won't have too much time to celebrate this one. Paul has another tough battle ahead as he takes on world No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Monday.

Paul also made it to the round of 16 in 2023 before falling to Ben Shelton in four sets. He will try to use the American crowd at Flushing Meadows to his advantage when he takes on Sinner.

"Hopefully some really good tennis. I'm really excited to play that match," he said during his post match interview. "Hopefully you guys can come out and we can produce something great out there."

No. 14 seed Paul in a battle with Diallo

Tommy Paul is looking to avoid becoming another upset victim in this US Open, and he dropped the first set in his third round match against Gabriel Diallo. Paul wa able to bounce back and take the second set, 6-3, and he currently leads the second set, 2-0. Still it looks as though Diallo isn't going down without a fight. This might be one to keep an eye on.

No. 1 Sinner coasts into fourth round

The Italian star looked as good as he has been this tournament on Saturday in taking down Christopher O'Connell in straight sets. Sinner has plenty of firepower and seemed to finally put all the pieces together as the competition level begins to rise. He awaits the winner of No. 14 Tommy Paul and Canadian prodigy Gabriel Diallo in the Round of 16.

No. 1 seed Sinner wins in straight sets

With Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz already eliminated, the road to Jannik Sinner's first US Open title looks relatively clear. The top seed just dispatched Christopher O'Connell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. That sets up a fourth-round matchup between Sinner and the winner of Gabriel Diallo and No. 14 seed Tommy Paul. That match is currently in the first set, with Paul up 6-5.

Van de Zandschulp's dream run comes to an end

The Dutchman who scored the stunning upset of Carlos Alcaraz on Thursday could not muster the same magic on Saturday as he was ousted in straight sets by No. 25 seed Jack Draper, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. The lefty is back into the Round of 16 after making it this far in this event a year ago. It's the Grand Slam event that he has performed best at so far in his young career. Draper has an interesting matchup with Tomas Machac coming up next on Monday.

It didn't take long for Jessica Pegula to discover her opponent in the fourth round of the US Open. No. 18 seed Diana Shnaider completely dismantled Sara Errani with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Shnaider, just 20, has already gone further than she ever has at the US Open in her young career.

Pegula has never gotten father than the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, but she has the chance to change that this year. She will face the winner of Sara Errani and Diana Shnaider in the fourth round.

No. 28 Alexei Popyrin upsets world No. 2 Novak Djokovic

Alexei Popyrin pulled off a 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Novak Djokovic during Friday's third round. He is advancing to his first ever round of 16 and will be facing American star Frances Tiafoe on Sunday. Popyrin had entered Friday's match 0-4 against top 5 opponents and a 87-106 overall record in major tournaments.

Djokovic won three out of four majors in 2023, but this year he failed to get a Grand Slam trophy, something that hadn't happened for him since 2017. However, 2024 wasn't all bad for him as he did win an Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games this summer to complete the career Golden Slam.

With Djokovic out, 2024 is the first year since 2002 that one of the Big 3 -- Djokovic, Rodger Federer and Rafael Nadal -- didn't win a men's singles major title.

No. 2 Novak Djokovic down two sets against No. 28 Alexei Popyrin

Defending champion Novak Djokovic entered this tournament searching for his 25th Grand Slam title, but he is looking shaky against Alexei Popyrin in their third round match tonight. Popyrin is up 6-4, 6-4 and needs to win just one more set for the upset. He has a 10-1 record when winning the first two sets in Major tournaments, but Djokovic has registered eight comebacks from two sets down through his impressive Grand Slam career.

While this would be a big upset, it would not be the biggest surprise of the tournament. World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz lost to unseeded Botic van de Zandschulp on Thursday night. The winner of this match will take on American star Frances Tiafoe during Sunday's round of 16.

Brandon Nakashima pulls off upset over No. 18 seed Lorenzo Musetti

Brandon Nakashima started the 2024 US Open unseeded, but the American has already pulled off two upsets over top opponents. Nakashima took a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Italian star Lorenzo Musetti on Friday and will be advancing to the round of 16.

It was a fantastic win for him but perhaps not completely surprising because he put everyone on notice earlier in the tournament. In the first round, Nakashima took a straight set victory over No. 15 Holger Rune. Earlier this summer, Nakashima also took wins against compatriots Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz, both ranked in the top 20.

Frances Tiafoe advances to round of 16 after five-set battle against Ben Shelton

It took Tiafoe over four hours to get it done, but the No. 20 seed survived and advanced after a highly competitive battle against No. 13 seed, and fellow American, Ben Shelton. Tiafoe is still chasing his first ever Grand Slam trophy, and the closest he has ever gotten was at the 2022 US Open when he reached the semifinals.

"I would definitely like to win it, I think I have the ability to," he told CBS Sports ahead of this tournament. "First and foremost, you want to put yourself in that second week… But why not? Why not be holding that trophy?"

Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff will meet in the round of 16

No. 13 seed Emma Navarro took a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win against Marta Kostyuk on Friday and earned a ticket to the round of 16. Navarro was ranked No. 149 early in 2023, but the New York native has been on the rise. She has picked up 43 wins this season, with only world no. 1 Iga Swiatek ahead of her.

The crowd at Flushing Meadows is in for a treat on Sunday as Navarro will be taking on fellow American Coco Gauff, the defending champion and No. 3 seed. This will be a rematch of the Wimbledon round of 16, which Navarro won 6-4, 6-3. Gauff picked up a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win against Elina Svitolina on Friday, and shortly after she talked about her upcoming match with Navarro during her ESPN interview.

"She has been having an incredible season...Playing her will be tough," Gauff said. "During Wimbledon, I think I got a little bit mentally out of that match. She is similar to Elina, you have to mentally be on top of the match from point one to the end of the match. That's how I'll approach it. I know it's going to be another tough one."

Wang Yafan upsets No. 20 Victoria Azarenka

Yafan and Azarenka split the first two sets of the match, setting up a decisive third set, and that's when Yafan took control. She rolled in the third set to win the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Perhaps the most telling stat of the match was that Yafan limited her unforced errors to 17 while Azarenka made 32. Yafan will now advance to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

Gauff storms back to defeat Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-3

After trailing 2-1 in the second set, Coco Gauff seemed to flip a switch and completely took over against Evina Svitolina. Once Gauff took a 3-2 lead in the second set, she never looked back. Gauff only got better as the match went on, and Svitolina seemed to run out of gas. This is now Gauff's 12th major win since after losing the first set since 2019. Only Ons Jabeur has more in that time frame. Gauff will now face the winner of Emma Navarro and Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round.

Gauff answers back

The American battled in the second set to stay on serve a couple of times and then secured the late break point to stay alive with a 6-3 win. Now into the third set, Gauff picked up the quick break point on Svitolina's first service game to take the advantage and continue marching forward. It's the kind of resolve you like to see from a champion as she continues to grow into the match.

Coco Gauff on the ropes

The American star is in trouble in the third round as she battles Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. Svitloina took the first set 6-3 thanks to a break point late in the set. Now, Gauff will have to rally in both the second and third sets if she hopes to defend her 2023 title in this event. Svitolina has never won a Grand Slam title, but she has reached the semifinals at the US Open back in 2019 as well as at Wimbledon twice in 2019 and 2023.
